TIPTOEING AROUND her own house. Ridiculous.

Okay, not her own house. Almost her own house. In three weeks her own house.

It was still ridiculous.

Hiding from Cameron until she could figure out some way of explaining that she wasn’t taking him as second best, or convenient, because she’d failed in Pittsburgh.

No! She hadn’t failed in Pittsburgh, any more than she had failed in Philadelphia. She’d worked hard. She’d done good work. Her bosses had failed.

Still, that wasn’t the point. The point was, she’d discovered she could do the job in corporate America…she just didn’t want to keep doing that job. And that didn’t mean she was a quitter. She’d almost convinced herself of that. Almost.

And now Uncle Horry was gone, and his house and wealth were soon to be hers, and she would never have to work again, ever, so she was free to marry Cameron and live in suburbia and raise kids and putter in her own garden and learn how to cook and maybe take a ceramics class and…and be a traitor to the feminist cause.

Darcie rubbed at her forehead as she paced her bedroom, hiding here now because when she’d tried to leave, Uncle Edwin and Pookie had been coming down the hall toward their own bedroom, holding hands, swinging their arms, singing “Wherever you go, whatever you do…”

It must be nice, being that happy, that free and easy with each other. Darcie didn’t know that feeling. What she and Cameron had nine months ago had been hot, passionate and kind of scary. They’d still been learning each other, still sort of dancing around each other in some sort of modern-day mating ritual that had a lot to do with where to go, what to do, and very little to do with actually getting to know each other.

And she’d certainly never felt so free and easy about…well, about sexuality. There had been plenty of passion, but they hadn’t been able to joke about it.

She hadn’t been able to joke about it….

Even that was different this time. Earlier, on the porch, she’d been daring. Sort of daring. Teasing. Definitely teasing.

She flopped down on the bed. “Forget it. Just forget it. You’re never going to be Pookie-bear.”

“I’ll drink to that,” Cameron said, and Darcie all but fell off the bed as she sprang to her feet, to see him standing in the doorway to his—wait a minute!

“How did you get the key to that door? Is that what you were doing when you were supposed to be getting rid of my splinter? That’s just plain sneaky.”

“Not really, Darc. Sneaky is hiding out up here to avoid…exactly what are you avoiding?”

“You. And now you know why,” Darcie said, putting some distance between herself and the bed. “We’re not supposed to have sex, remember?”

“No. Well, maybe vaguely,” he said, advancing on her, his grin positively evil. “I think I’ve been getting mixed signals. Would you know anything about that?”

“I know. I’ve been up here, trying to feel bad about that.” Darcie wet her lips, looked around the room.
